Family volunteering adds three more stoves in Guatemala
We bid farewell to the Delange family today, who came for a week and built three stoves in Santa María de Jesús. Greg, Alex, Nicole, Christopher and Danielle, from Florida, were our pioneering family and all played their part.
Whilst the rest of the family were studying Spanish and visiting Macadamia and coffee plantations for the first couple of days, Alex, who is Venezuelan, worked on the first stove.
On Wednesday and Thursday, with all the family ready for work, the competition was on, with Greg and Christopher working with Juan Carlos in a small compound where 7 families - over 60 people, lived.
Alex, Nicole and Danielle worked with Alberto in a tiny area where 4 families lived. Their stove was built in a very small dark room and working conditions were cramped to say the least.
Both stoves were finished on time and will be fired up in the next couple of days. New pots were bought to round off the work and there was still time for the kids from both countries to get to know eachother.
On Friday, they all headed up Pacaya Volcano, with Welber as their guide, to toast marshmallows on the lava flow.
A great week and a big thankyou to the Delanges and we look forward to welcoming more families in the future.
