Annual reforestation program gets under way in Itzapa, Guatemala
Our aim each year is to plant 10,000 trees in the surrounding area of San Andrés Itzapa. GVI Phoenix rents the land the nursery is on and also supplies tools and necessary items needed.
The women of Elena's group must tend to the trees from seeds to saplings, ready for planting. Some trees can be sold, so an income can be made for the women's group.
On Friday we went with the older kids from Agua and Tajumulco, who are learning English, Elena and some of the mothers to plant some trees.
After quite a long walk in the surrounding mountains of Itzapa we reached the field where we finally planted the trees. All the kids and women worked really hard to get all the trees planted.
It was a great excursion where the kids had a lot of fun and learned about the importance of reforestation, while they taught the volunteers a bit about the flora and fauna in the surrounding mountains of Itzapa. So basically everybody learned a bit more about the environment which was great.
