Ch’orti’ language program in Honduras
We have recently launched a Ch’orti’ language program in San Rafael. Ch’orti’ is the indigenous language in the area, but sadly there aren’t many people left that can speak it and it is in danger of becoming extinct. When a language is lost, all of us lose the knowledge contained in that language's words, grammar and way of thinking, knowledge that can never be recovered.
To avert this, Conimch (Consejo Nacional Indigena Maya Ch’orti’), which looks after the interests of indigenous people, is giving Cho’rti’ training to local communities. We now employ one of those trainees, Juan Ramon Martinez, the father of one of our first graders, Cristian. The children and the volunteers are enjoying the lessons immensely.
