First Experience on the Project in Brazil
You never fully know what to expect before setting foot on a project. I (Elise) assumed it would be fun and challenging with the possibility of my patience being tested by crying children. Upon arrival at the project I felt relieved. The kids and I wore the exact same facial expression. It was a mixture of excitement, curiosity and awkwardness, like we didn't know what to make of each other.
Thankfully, within minutes of playtime any nerves and doubts were replaced with high pitched squeals and laughter. I found it amazing how quickly childhood games and the fascination with everything in the world immediately returned whilst being amongst them.
It was only once we had boarded the bus home I contemplated the work. Initially, I was thankful for all of the opportunities I have received over the years, the privileged upbringing. Thinking about the kids and their circumstances put everything into perspective. I found myself feeling extremely fortunate to be a part of a project that offers the fun and education that should define childhood.
