Girls' Football in Honduras
GVI Phoenix’s colegio in Honduras is breaking down the football walls in the rural communities of Barbasco and San Rafael. The girls in grades 7, 8, and 9 have begun to play football! Coached by GVI Phoenix secondary school teacher and driver, Edgar Adan Rodas, the girls have been introduced to the rules of the sport, the formation of players on the field, and various football techniques and strategies. Weekly practices have also been arranged at an early start of 7am in order to improve their foot work and skills.
Their first official scrimmage was held Friday March 4, 2011 on San Rafael’s field against the boys in 5th and 6th grade at the primary school. Half time was even taken and a ref helped make the calls while the rest of the students and teachers from the primary school cheered on the sidelines. The end result was a win by the boys with a 4-1 score. However, the girls played well and looked like naturals out on the field for their first time.
Now, they will continue their training and practice in preparation for their big match scheduled for the end of March against another girl’s colegio football team. Our hope is that this can continue and that they will be able to play against numerous girls’ football teams in and around Copan.
