Adult literacy classes start in Nicaragua
The last two weeks the people of La Cruz have been kept busy with a few visitors. Last week, FUNARTE, a local organization which works with underprivileged kids gave a painting workshop for the kids in Estelí.
It gave the kids a chance to explore their creative side and a chance for the GVI Phoenix volunteers to see the kids outside of the community.
Then on Friday nurses from El Centro de Salud (Health Centre) came out to La Cruz to perform check-ups for everyone and give tetanus shots for the kids.
GVI Phoenix finished their second week of Adult literacy classes in La Cruz. Unfortunately many of the older members of community were never given the opportunity to an education or were forced to leave school at an early age, hence illiteracy is a problem.
However, GVI Phoenix with support of the “Centro de Alfabetización” (literacy center) hopes to give the adults of La Cruz a second opportunity to learn to read and write. It´s not easy for an adult to admit that they cannot read or write so we salute their courage and are looking forward to working with them in the long-term future.
Martyn has joined us as a long-term volunteer and has really got stuck in working with Steve and the younger kids with their alphabet and numbers and also a bit of sport!
