GVI Phoenix Honduras celebrates Day of the Child and Independence Day
This past week we have celebrated Day of the Child and Independence Day in our project in Honduras. These are two special days for the country and the community, San Rafael, where we work.
It was the first time the community had been able to celebrate Independence Day with a march, "desfile", and it was made even more poignant with the GVI Phoenix Secondary school taking part, in what is our inaugural year with secondary education.
The community was overwhelmed and it was excellent for the mothers and fathers to see their children, now receiving secondary education, marching with pride and purpose.
Many thanks to Carolina, Erika and Edgar for organising everything, from start to finish, and making this week a true week to remember in San Rafael folklore!
It is custom for the "desfiles" to have instruments and drums and our children were no different, making theirs from old tins and hollowed out pieces of wood.
These days really make the children and parents believe in education, why it is important, and also be proud of themsleves, as they walk around the community where they live, celebrating Independence Day.
