Sonia - a new girl in Triunfo, Perú
Sonia has joined the Triunfo family in 3rd grade. She has learning difficulties and has suffered from severe illnesses during her young life. We have spoken to her Mother along with the teachers about the aims of Sonia attending school, of which they are for her to learn enough in order to gain some form of employment e.g. in a shop.
The volunteers (especially Mari, Liz, Catherine & now Kaitlyn who’s returned for a few weeks) have been working really hard one-on-one with her, concentrating on the basics, and trying to improve her self esteem and social skills.
We’re starting to see Sonia come out of her shell a little bit, which in such a short amount of time is great. Her Mother told us that she found Sonia at home sounding out words from a newspaper, which has never happened before and it’s all thanks to the great one on one with the vols!
Recently, watching her we can see a real improvement with how she interacts with other children, she's still very withdrawn and keeps herself to herself, but bit by bit she's starting to interact more. She's also showing affection to the vols, holding their hand, leaning against them, which just a couple of months ago would never have happened!
