The Zikin in Honduras
Recently, we had the opportunity to witness a “Zikin” in our project in Barbasco, Honduras. “Zikin” happens around the time of “All Souls Day”, and it is a ceremony in which members of the community pray for the people that have died in the village that year. They were represented by three lit candles at the front of the altar made out of banana leafs.
After the praying, food was shared out, everyone bringing something with them, tamales, horchata etc.. (all traditional foods). It was a real privilege to witness the “Zikin”, and very encouraging to see some of the mothers really trying to preserve their traditional culture.
