Semana Santa in Itzapa - Guatemala
To celebrate Semana Santa, or Easter, in Guatemala, the children in our school in Itzapa spent weeks preparing. On the day, the volunteers prepared the "alfombra", made from flowers and other plants. It looked great, only to be destroyed by a few short steps later!
We followed the procession around the streets of Itzapa, led by two elderly men playing a drum and a flute, stopping 14 times, over four hours, with many members of the community coming out to watch. It was a fantastic day and great to see that culture and tradition is still alive and well.
