Escuela Guardabaranco provides much needed shelter during the rains in Nicaragua
The sun has made an unexpected entrance this week in Nicaragua and has been welcomed with open arms, especially among the members of our local communities, Chiriza and La Thompson. Esteli and the outlying areas in Nicaragua were hit especially hard by the after effects of Hurricane Mateo off the Caribbean Coast.
In La Thompson, homes were flooded by the rising river and some of the families stayed in our school, Escuela Guardabaranco, as their homes were filled with water and mud. Martita, a student in our school, stayed in the school overnight with her family for four days.
The family was very appreciative of this support and also for the rice, beans and fruit provided by GVI during the storms. Martita’s father was kind enough to show his appreciation by providing carne de res (beef) served with the normal meal of beans and rice the children receive each day. This was a treat for the children and they didn’t leave any food behind!
