New Phoenix school opens in Nicaragua

GVI’s second school in Nicaragua was officially launched on July 5, 2010 with over 180 students registering with Karla, our local staff member and Tita, our new local staff member in the community of Chiresa.

Registration took place beneath the new school structure funded by GVI volunteers and the GVI Charitable Trust and built by our local mason/builder, Don Pedro, his son, Alex, a few community members and GVI volunteers and staff.

The collaboration between community members and the GVI team has been outstanding and has created a constant buzz of energy.

GVI staff’s "interesting" trek hauling a truck full of school materials such as tables, chairs and white-boards on roads full of pot holes, steep climbs and mud was well worth it. As we entered the community a crescendo of noise could be heard and when we reached the school, parents, children and community leaders applauded at full pitch.

It was a truly amazing experience that confirmed why we started this school project in Chiresa. The number of students has been high and with our established school in La Thompson, GVI Phoenix Nicaragua needs more support and help than ever. Big thanks to our wonderful volunteers who are currently on the ground and helping us to achieve our goals at both schools: Danica, Leon, Jenna, Tyrone, Vishal, Adam, Kirsten, Ashley, and Joe.
