Nicaragua signs off 2009 in style!

The volunteers and staff members had a wonderful end to the school year at the GVI School here in Nicaragua. We had our first official graduation celebration for the kids who have competed preschool.

10 children graduated from preschool and received their certificates from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education. GVI volunteers and staff members, as well as parents, were all very proud of the hard work and dedication that has been put into the project over the previous months.

One staff member who’s been with the project since it began 11 months ago comments, “I remember when many of these kids couldn’t recognize their vowels…now they’re reading words, they now their shapes, colores, numbers, and feel comfortable interacting with other children, it’s a huge achievement!”

And to reward the kids for their hard work throughout the year we had a Christmas party on the last day of classes. We celebrated birthdays; the kids received their Christmas cards with a picture of them for their parents, a new toothbrush and toothpaste, a little Christmas gift for each one, and of course…cake!

The celebration and gifts were made possible through donations of previous volunteers so GVI would like to thank them for their generosity!
