GVI Phoenix in numbers in 2009

2009 has been a great year for the Phoenix projects in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Perú; we even managed to keep operations going in Honduras, despite the political unrest. To put it into perspective, here is the year in numbers:

Over 1,100 children were taught regularly by volunteers in all grades in Primary School, from kindergarten until Secondary School level. Whether in group or one-on-one, all children deserve an education.

With GVI Phoenix's own secondary school in Honduras, Plan Moo-funded secondary education in Ecuador and scholarships in Guatemala and Peru, over 180 children now attend Secondary School. 10 children funded by GVI Phoenix in College

Over 80,000 teaching hours were undertaken by volunteers and GVI staff; add to this the hours of lesson planning and preparation, brings us to over 100,000 hours dedicated to the work.

140 energy-efficient stoves were built in all our countries where we work. With up to 75% less wood now being cut down for firewood, one can also hazzard a guess on the number of trees saved. We planted 10,000 trees this year to help this number!

Over 75 local people are employed directly, including drivers, cooks, teachers, cleaners and of course, the host families. Add to this the number of people who receive a regular income from us in the markets, and the distribution of wealth is plain to see.

Our work is based in 16 communities in 5 countries in Latin America, directly affecting over 500 families.

As part of our daily nutrition program for the children, fruit is an important source of both vitamins and water. Over 350,000 whole or parts of fruits given out throughout the year.

Including breakfasts, lunches and special occasions, over 300,000 semi and wholly subsidised meals distributed to the children, for many, their only meal of the day.

None of this would have been possible without all the volunteers hard work this year, and all the years that precede this. Thankyou every single one of you and to put it bluntly, you are the difference!

How does GVI Phoenix make a difference?

The following film was made in Guatemala, though the message is the same across all GVI Phoenix projects
