All well in Canacota, Perú

The volunteers in Canocota continue to work hard. This week we were joined by Tristan. He and Gil have been teaming up to teach the fourth grade. An extra set of eyes and ears is well suited for the lively personalities we’ve enjoyed in this group.

The fourth grade has also recently expanded yet again with the return of Rodrigo, a student who has been living with relatives and attending school in Arequipa to improve his education. Rodrigo is now home, living with his parents and can greatly benefit from the personalized attention of having more than one teacher in a classroom of children with varying abilities.

This week the fourth grade continued their work with sentence structure and progressed toward story development. Tristan and Gil are very enthusiastic about their long-term creative writing goals for the group.

Gill and the third grade plugged along with reading practice and alphabet recognition as they worked towards learning how to use a dictionary. In math they worked a lot with number sequences as well as conjuntos.

This Wednesday the game of choice was football, a much more demanding game than volleyball at an elevation of 3,700 meters, but everyone finds it easy to have fun when the whole school gets to run around in a semi-controlled atmosphere.

In the next few weeks we will be starting up the food program which will ensure that every child at the school will receive at least one nutritious meal a day. The parents have been busily working to clean, organize, paint and even add a window for better lighting in the kitchen before lunch gets underway.

Thank you to everyone for all the hard work that makes this new project a success!
