Adult literacy classes get underway in Honduras

One of the highlights in San Rafael, Honduras over the last month has been the begining of the state mandated adult literacy class that Eric, Pam and the GVI Phoenix volunteers have been teaching.

As the children increasingly receive opportunites for education, in part through GVI's presence in the school, the parents are recognizing and learning about the long term value of education and to have them voluntarily showing up to literacy classes is a definite sign of progress.

We now have a class of 6 mothers and numbers are growing by the week; although this is still a small number, it's incredible to see the mothers from the community be brave enough to step foot in a classroom, an environment which is completely foreign to them and surely intimidating.

The first class began with practicing using a pencil by doing exercises to strengthen their hand eye coordination. So far we have taught them to recognize and write the numbers 1-30 and the 5 vowels. Next week we will begin teaching consonants and combining vowels with each consonant.
