Urcusiqui takes part in an art Competition - Ecuador

Surrounded by pots of only the primary colours plus white and black, and armed with a pencil and 4 different paint brushes, our 3 brave entrants from Urcusiqui nervously waited for permission to start creating their masterpieces. They had won the chance to represent Urcusiqui in their grade category in this local competition against 5 other schools.

Competition was fierce with anxious teachers signalling exaggerated guidance to their bemused pupils from the doorway of the classroom. None were more subtle than our own Srta Rocio doing a splendidly animated action to tell a bemused Mari Belen to mix the colours – so expressive was she that she overbalanced and almost fell out of the door!

Each child had to draw and paint their picture from memory – and the theme? Ah yes, well, hmm, the theme was sexual and reproductive health.

So when I returned to the competition room after half the time had passed to give encouraging smiles to our 3 girls, I found myself surrounded by 18 drawings of boy and girl sexual organs.

Then judging time arrived – the 2 hours of work put in by each young artist were compared against the output of their peers. And the result? I am delighted to report that Urcusiqui won 2nd prize in two of the three grades.

So a proud Maria Belen (5th grade) and Rosita (7th grade) accepted their ribbons and mochilas from local dignatories whilst the happy teachers of Urcusiqui looked on.
All the pictures have gone away to be framed before each is hung for all to admire in the artist’s school.
